Chapter 16

My hair jerked tight to my head.

The man through the window cocked the gun and nudged the barrel against her temple. Her face warped with anguish, but she stayed stone still otherwise.

My heart hammered. We needed to get to her, but with my human-like slowness, I would never make it.

Damien's hand clasped my arm. “Stay near me at all times unless I instruct you otherwise.”

Light flashed from Damien’s hand. Geometric shapes glowed along the front doorframe, the outer walls of the house, and the roof. I didn’t have time to ask what he’d done.

We sifted into the house. Even as I steadied myself against a bookshelf, Damien knocked the gun out of the attacker’s hand in a lightning flash of a strike. The weapon flew across the living room and crashed into the flat-screen TV.

The same heavy sludge blanketed the room. It suffocated me. Made my hair feel weighed down, sucked against my scalp. But I moved closer to the duo poised at the window.

The man was an exact clone of the one in my apartment—slate grey eyes, pale flesh, and dark hair. He glared at us and yanked the woman's dark hair. Her brown eyes winced.

I jabbed him in the nose with the heel of my hand. Black blood spurted from his nostrils onto the crown of her head, but he didn't let go.

Children wailed from the other room, and another copy of the clone appeared in the dining room doorway. He held a Fae man. The father, I assumed.

Damien lobbed an azure icicle at the first clone's head. He dodged it.

The clones could sit the Fae away at any moment, as long as they were touching. We had to separate them.

My heart squeezed. This was my chance to stop a kidnapping, but I had no magic to fight with. I hated being so powerless. “Where the hell are the others?”

Another sapphire orb shot through the air, striking a third kidnapper in the leg. “Open the front door. I put wards over the house so they can’t sift away, but the Unseelie also put them up to keep any but the strongest of us out. If you open it, they can get in. The Unseelie wards will disengage.”

I scrambled to the door. Something hot hit my leg, and I cried out but continued forward. The stench of burning leather and skin hit my nose, and the sting of the burn made me wince. I swung the door open. Jaxtyn and Asher burst into the living room.

I spun around. Another clone smirked at me, a mustard yellow orb swelling in his hands. Must have been the same one who'd burned me.

“Motherfucker.” Angry heat ripped across my face. I drew my gun and fired. He launched the orb at the same time, hitting my left biceps.

The bullet ripped into his chest, and he popped like a balloon. Ash scattered into the air as he disintegrated. I wrinkled my nose at the burnt metal and rotten egg stench. My arm burned.

Damien tossed me his gun and pointed to a room next to the living room.
